Jude Morrison left the theater with a giddy, scantily clad
woman on each arm. Noticing Stan, the elderly bus driver, smoking a cigarette,
Jude steered the women away from him and towards the crosswalk.
"I see you haven't changed a bit," Stan called
after Jude.
"Now isn't the time," Jude growled.
"You don't fool me."
Snarling at Stan, Jude hailed a cab and turned to his arm
candy.
"I'm sorry ladies but I'll have to get a rain
check."
Jude smiled charmingly at them then handed the cabbie a wad
of cash from his pocket. As the taxi drove away, Jude's face hardened.
"Happy now?" Jude asked.
"I could care less, but I know you will be."
"Listen Stan, I'm not that guy you remember. Give me
some credit."
"I give you plenty of credit. But I've seen the way you
look at her. I'm sure everyone else has too."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Don't play dumb with me. You can leave the show with
as many women you want, they'll never be her. So why do it?"
"Because I have to, ok Stan? You think I don't know the
effect I have on women? I've seen the way Olivia looks at me. Ten years ago I
would've used that to my advantage. Hell, even five years ago. But not
anymore."
"Because you use the ones who mean nothing to
you?"
"It's not like that. Besides, they're using me. How
many rumors have you heard about me? That's because they all want a story. The
Jude Morrison story. Don't feel sorry for them. Or me for that matter."
"You love her, don't you?"
"I'm going now, Stan."
"Why don't you tell her?"
"Because she's young, ok? She needs to live. Experience
life for once. She doesn't need me holding her back."
"I don't think she'd see it that way."
"Keep it to yourself old man," Jude
said as he walked away. "She's better off without me anyway."
