Becoming Rain teaser 1

Luke Boone doesn't know exactly what his uncle Rust is involved in but he wants in on it—the cars, the money, the women. And it looks like he's finally getting his wish. When Rust hands him the managerial keys to the garage, they come with a second set—one that opens up the door to tons of cash and opportunity. Though it's not exactly legal, Luke's never been one to worry about that sort of thing. Especially when it puts him behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 and onto the radar of gorgeous socialite named Rain.

Clara Bertelli is at the top of her game—at only twenty-six years old, she's one of the most successful undercover officers in the Washington, DC, major crime unit, and she's just been handed a case that could catapult her career and expose one of the West coast's most notorious car theft rings. But, in order to do it, she'll need to go deep undercover as Rain Martines. Her target? The twenty-four-year-old nephew of a key player who appears ready to follow in his uncle's footsteps.

As Clara drifts deeper into the luxurious lifestyle of Rain, and further into the arms of her very attractive and charming target, the lines between right and wrong start to blur, making her wonder if she'll be able to leave it all behind. Or if she'll even want to.

I really didn’t think I was going to like Becoming Rain. And I'm thrilled to report that I couldn’t have been more wrong. I was quickly sucked into Rain/Clara and Luke’s world. This book is unlike anything I’ve ever read before. And I’m not just talking about plot. I’m talking characters, writing style, detail—it’s all flawless. I don’t know if I’ve loved a book this hard since One Tiny Lie from K.A. Tucker’s Ten Tiny Breaths series. That’s not to say that I don’t love all her books, but that one and this one are my absolute favorites of hers. And I’m barely even able to type this with my excitement from just finishing this book. A book that truly blew me away with its depth and overall awesomeness.

“Where do I draw the line? If my target places his hand on my knee, do I let him? Or do I push his hand away? If he tries to kiss me, how do I refuse him? How many times can I refuse him before he loses interest? How far do I let it go?
There was no official rulebook of “can” and “can’t” handed to me when I took this case on. I only have my gut. And my moral integrity. And the respect of my colleagues. And concern for my safety.”

Becoming Rain is both very alike and very different from its predecessor, Burying Water (see review below). On that note, you do NOT have to read the first book in order to read this book, but that’s where we first meet Luke Boone and some other characters. Both books have the alternating POVs between the hero and the heroine, but unlike book one, this book is told solely in present tense. Both books are rich in detail and very plot and character driven. They both have a strong romance suspense feel, and both books are unique from all other books and even from each other.

“I can play this game. It’s a dangerous game. The adrenaline junkie in me—it’s in all undercovers—likes dangerous games.”

We first met Luke Boone in Burying Water. He and Jesse were and still are best friends. We already know (both from the first book and from the get go of this book) that Luke is itching to get in on his uncle’s secret business. We also know that Luke and his uncle are extremely close with a father-son type bond. And, we most definitely know that his Uncle Rust is definitely up to some shady stuff. However, Luke doesn’t have a criminal bone in his body. That much is known from the start. Besides being kinda spoiled, a little money hungry, ambitious, and a bit of a player, he is just your average, hot 24-year old guy. And he totally captivated my heart. The way he slowly but surely gave his heart to Rain? LOVE. He (and Rain/Clara) aren’t full of swoony words and thoughts, which is one of the things I love most about them. They could almost be average people (given that they weren’t book heroes), with the way they go about their thoughts and actions. It wasn’t insta-love between them, but it was a real friendship that blossomed into something more.

“You’re perfect. Almost too perfect…Sometimes I wonder if you’re even real.” I close my eyes with his words, as his mouth finds my collarbone.
I am real. At least, parts of who he’s seen are. And this is real, what’s happening between us now.”

Well, the friendship wasn’t actually real, not at first anyway. Not when Luke was actually Officer Clara’s assignment and ticket to finally joining the FBI. Clara is an undercover officer posing as a rich daddy’s girl in order to get close to Luke. Luke comes to know her as Rain, and Clara eventually blurs the line between Rain and Clara. Not that I’m complaining. I thought the way that Clara gradually fell for Luke—the one thing she promised her team she would never do—was well-timed and made me fall in love with the both of them. For the record, I was cheering for them from their very first encounter. Their relationship, despite how much Clara stressed over making it happen, seemed so easy and natural to me. It felt real even when I knew the whole thing was fake and Rain had a bug on her 75% of the time. Clara was a great heroine—confident, sassy, independent, and a wonderful liar. It all made me fly through the pages.

“Luke’s large frame swallows me up as soft, full lips land on mind, with an odd mix of tenderness and need that wasn’t there the first two times he kissed me now radiating off him. It’s intoxicating enough to dissolve the last of my focus, as I let myself be consumed by all of him. Until I’m no longer a cop and Luke isn’t who he is. I’m just a twenty-six-year-old girl with feelings and needs who’s attracted to this beautiful man.”

It’s not often that you see books that are so well-thought out these days. And you can tell that K.A. Tucker definitely did her research—and a lot of it. You can also tell how brilliant of a writer she is. All the twists and turns, it had to be hard to come up with it and keep track of it all. But, K.A. Tucker made it seem like a breeze. Her writing style always amazes me, and the way she sucks me into a whole new world never fails. I usually highlight while I read, but with this book, I barely had anything because I was too engrossed by the story to remember to look for quotes. That doesn’t happen often enough anymore. I don’t know what she’s writing next, but sign me up.

“Honestly, I don’t really know what I’m doing with my life or how things are going to play out here. But I do know that, if I looked out my window tomorrow and knew that you didn’t live across from me anymore…I wouldn’t like it. At all.”
“I know what you mean.”

And don’t forget BURYING WATER, the first book in this thrilling series…

The top-selling, beloved indie author of Ten Tiny Breaths returns with a new romance about a young woman who loses her memory—and the man who knows that the only way to protect her is to stay away.

Left for dead in the fields of rural Oregon, a young woman defies all odds and survives—but she awakens with no idea who she is, or what happened to her. Refusing to answer to “Jane Doe” for another day, the woman renames herself “Water” for the tiny, hidden marking on her body—the only clue to her past. Taken in by old Ginny Fitzgerald, a crotchety but kind lady living on a nearby horse farm, Water slowly begins building a new life. But as she attempts to piece together the fleeting slivers of her memory, more questions emerge: Who is the next-door neighbor, quietly toiling under the hood of his Barracuda? Why won’t Ginny let him step foot on her property? And why does Water feel she recognizes him?

Twenty-four-year-old Jesse Welles doesn’t know how long it will be before Water gets her memory back. For her sake, Jesse hopes the answer is never. He knows that she’ll stay so much safer—and happier—that way. And that’s why, as hard as it is, he needs to keep his distance. Because getting too close could flood her with realities better left buried.

The trouble is, water always seems to find its way to the surface.

Jesse, Alex, and Water’s story was unique in every sense of the word. I have never read anything like this plot-wise and writing style-wise. I don’t even know how to write this review because I feel like everything I say would ruin the experience. Yes, this is more than just a book. It is an experience. And I feel like the best way to read it is to go into it like me. I had no idea what this book was about. Not only is the synopsis super vague, but I didn’t even read it. K.A. Tucker is a talented enough writer to where I know that I can go into her books blind and still come out loving her on the other side.

“You probably shouldn’t tell people those sorts of things. You don’t know me.”
“You’re right. I don’t, but…I feel like I do.”
“I think I know what you mean.”

With that being said, I think this might be the shortest review I’ll ever write. Why? Because, like I said, it’s best to go in blind. Let the book take you on a journey like nothing you’ve ever encountered before. Burying Water has everything—a fantastically unique plot, complex characters, a deep storyline, a suspenseful buildup, a profound message, intense emotions, love that conquers all, etc. When I finished the book, I was left in awe and a deep respect for K.A. Tucker’s bold writing style that was unique only to this book. Don’t trust me? Read it for yourself.

“Jesse…My blood still races when I see him throw a leg over the fence. My chest still swells when I think about how much he must care for me. And my heart now aches when I think about how much he risked for me. He saved mw long before the night I almost died; that much I’m sure of. Maybe one day I’ll remember how.”

Born in small-town Ontario, K.A. Tucker published her first book at the age of six with the help of her elementary school librarian and a box of crayons. She currently resides in a quaint town outside of Toronto with her husband, two beautiful girls, and an exhausting brood of four-legged creatures.
