Fate Buchanan just wants to escape the constraints of her old life. After checking her mother into rehab and catching her fiancĂ© with her maid of honor the night before their wedding, she ran. Angry and hurt, she’s aching to do something reckless.
Dean Maxwell is having one last summer of freedom before taking over his family’s multi-billion dollar medical conglomerate. When he sees a beautiful woman running down the beach alone after dark, he knows it’s not safe. So he does something impulsive.
When their paths cross unexpectedly after a night of unbridled passion, neither of them can forget the memory of the affair they shared. What began as one night is about to become a whole lot more.
*While part of the Second Chance series, this novel is a standalone.
I'm a big Caisey Quinn girl, so I am excited to read any new
book that she writes, and the characters in this book didn't disappoint! If you've read any of Caisey's books before,
then you know that she loves music, and you've met some lovely musicians, like
my boy Trace Atkins of the Girl with Guitar series (whose team I will
always be on) and Van Ransom, the first hero in her Last Second Chance
series. Now, girls, I know we all love a
man with a guitar, but let me just say this: Dean Maxwell may be pushing a pen
and typing on a computer (as well as basically ruling his own little universe),
but he is no less fabulous and exciting as Caisey's other leading men. In fact, his "every man" status
kind of makes him more so. Dean is the
kind of guy (albeit with a beach house in the Hamptons) that you know, and
better yet, you might even have the good luck to stumble upon.
So, here's the scoop: Our girl, Fate, has just had her life
turned upside down in a pretty spectacular fashion. So, what does she do in response? She wanders the beach, contemplates ending it
all, sacrifices an extraordinary pair of heels to the sea gods, and happens
upon a hottie. I'll just say it--we
should all be so lucky. Even the
spectacular disaster was totally worth it (and the shoes!), in my humble
opinion.
Dean Maxwell doesn't need or particularly want any romantic
entanglements. He's done a good job of
avoiding these entanglements in the past, and he's got no immediate plans to
change that. Then, he meets Fate on the
beach (although he doesn't know her name or anything about her), and he's
hooked. So much so, that when we meet
him in this book, he's frantically searching for what basically amounts to a
ghost. He just can't seem to let his
brief encounter with her go--and he's kind of freaking his best friend out in
the process.
Fate is new to the city, just started her first job and fresh
off of her spectacular disaster (which, I think, saved her from a much bigger
spectacular disaster). She's had the good
fortune to fall into a fabulous living situation that she can mostly afford,
but she's struggling financially to make it in the big, bad, expensive city
(NYC) while simultaneously supporting her mother financially through her rehab stint
at the Second Chance Ranch. Her night on
the beach with Dean is always with her, but she's got way too much going on to
dwell on it too long--and she likes it that way. Suffice it to say, she's not trolling
Facebook for Dean.
Then, ba-BAM! One day
she goes into work, as per the usual, and there he is. And for Dean, our loveably obsessive hero,
there she is. And we're off! So, I'll shut up about it because, trust me,
you don't want me to spoil the loveliness to come.;)
Here's what I always love about Ms. Quinn: Her characters
are real. They speak to me because
they're so much like the people I know.
They're messy and make mistakes, but they usually take their knocks and
learn some powerful lessons. They're
loyal and determined, but they don't take crap.
Caisey's heroines aren't suckers; they don't bow down or cowtow--at
least not for long. These girls have
spunk and sass and backbones, and even when they get their hearts broken, they
keep moving. I love that. Fate is my kind of girl. She'll give it all up for you, if she loves
you. She'll compromise, she'll
sacrifice, and she'll stick by your side.
The lengths she goes to support her mother, while simultaneously
carrying the old scars her mother carried and passed along, made me melt for
her. Sometimes, in our efforts not to be
something, we swing so far wide of what's best for us, and swinging back isn't
all that easy; but Fate is a smart girl and she's got it in her to keep
swinging.
Many people, after a spectacular disaster like Fate's,
might've turned tail and run. They might have headed back to the familiar, to
the safe. They might have even gone
right back into that disaster and tried to make the best of it. They might have sacrificed their happiness
for safety--but not Fate. She's smart
enough to know that sometimes the hardest things are the best things in the
end. Or as Ms. Quinn so perfectly puts
it, "Sometimes, the worst things that happen in our lives put us directly
on the path to the best things that will ever happen to us." Lemonade out of lemons, folks.
Dean has the good fortune to be literally in Fate's path on
the way out of this disaster, and though he seems all fun and games and bad-boy
charm in the beginning, there's a lot more to Dean. We see it pretty quickly in the way that he
holds onto this one night with Fate, whereas plenty of other men would've
thanked their lucky stars to be in the right place at the right time and then
moved along. Dean doesn't. Dean gets stuck on the something more that
could be Fate. But it's not all fun and
games and sexy hotness with Dean--this boy has some fairly deep scars of his
own to heal. Maybe even deeper than
Fate's, but let me just tell you, girls, that on the way to uncovering and,
ultimately, healing those scars, Fate (and you!) will enjoy the ride. There may be tears, but I promise you will
laugh, too. Example: "You would be the lucky bastard
that got to fuck a supermodel virgin mermaid. I swear, all the good stuff
happens to you." Uh huh. That happened, and I laughed out loud. And did I mention the hotness? Bring a fan; maybe even one of those little
misting fans, just to be safe.
If you're not yet a fan of the lovely Caisey Quinn, I don't know where
you've been, but get on the train. It's
fun here, and there's never a dull moment.
After you finish Falling for Fate, you might even be asking Van
Ransom to turn the volume down because you're having trouble hearing Dean. Yep, I said that. It's not all about guys with guitars anymore,
girls. Get ready for the suit and tie.
