BLOG TOUR & REVIEW - A Matter of Forever (Fate #4) by Heather Lyons

It all comes down to this . . .

Chloe Lilywhite has struggled for years to find her footing in a series of dangerous and demanding worlds. Creator, first tier Council member, and one of the most powerful Magicals in existence, she was little more than one of Fate’s pawns. But now, Chloe is back home and ready to call the shots. She knows what she wants and who she wants to be.

Except the Elders never got the memo.

Annar and Magical-kind are under attack. The lives of Chloe’s loved ones, and life as they know it, are at stake. Chloe's the key to taking the Elders down, but they won't go quietly into the night.

This time, neither will Chloe.

*This is a New Adult title, suitable for readers 18+.

**WARNING: Do NOT read this review if you have not read the first three books in the Fate series. They are NOT standalones and this review will contain spoilers for them**

I can’t tell you how scared I was to read this book. Terrified, excited, anxious…those are all feelings I had going into the book. And they just. Got. Worse. In all the good ways, of course. One of the things I love most about Heather’s books is that they make me feel. This series in particular causes my emotions to go all over the place. The Fate series reminds me of why I read. I read to be transported to different worlds, to live lives I could never dream of, and to fall in love over and over and over again. This is the last book told in Chloe’s POV… And I couldn’t have dreamed of a better way to end their journey.

“Wake up, he begs me. Open your eyes. Let me know you’re okay. You have to be okay. Open your eyes, Chloe. I love you. Don’t leave me—don’t do this. You are not leaving me, not now. You’re okay. You’re going to be okay. Hold on, baby. Just…hold on.”

A Matter of Forever picks up right where A Matter of Truth left off. Already our hearts are being ground into pieces with the state Chloe is in the beginning. I don’t want to say much about the plot because I don’t want to ruin it. But, Chloe, Jonah, and Kellan are all in Annar again. Trying to stay alive and save the world from doom. Are you imagining bad things happening? Well keep imagining…The love triangle is still very prominent in this book, however it was very clear that she was staying with Jonah. We just had the occasionally, heart-smashing moments where we would pine over Kellan. But, we knew—because Chloe knew—that she was meant to be with Jonah.  Yes, I know my explanation is messy, but the entire series is messy (in a good way) and it messes with your head a little and with your heart a lot.

“Memories flash throughout my mind, of time spent in there before we went to Costa Rica a year before. Of how his mouth felt like on mine. How my heart still calls out for him, no matter what my mind says. And of how I feel him in every fiber of my being when we’re in the same room together.”

I am so proud of Chloe. She’s grown up a lot since A Matter of Fate. She no longer frustrates me or makes me want to punch her in the face. She knows now that actions have consequences, and her actions in particular affect the lives of way too many. She, Jonah, and Kellan are in as impossible situation—I mean, hello, what are you supposed to do with two Connections? Two Connections who are hot, twin brothers to be exact. But, never fear, her relationship with Jonah is stronger than ever, while Kellan is just in the background, making sure they’re safe…and breaking my heart. Chloe is definitely not a girl anymore, she’s a woman. Her experiences and situation have taught her to grow up and I’m so proud of her.

“It’s funny how we often look at our past and the actions there within rose colored glasses, even if we know better. Sometimes, it’s hard to rectify a present and possible future you never expected with the past and all the wishes it held.”

Let’s talk about the boys…Jonah and Kellan. I used to love them equally, but I think I definitely lean towards Kellan a lot more now. There’s just something about a guy who gives up everything for the girl he loves—including the girl. And watching him not get the girl is just heartbreaking. Jonah is the mature one—he’s the rock. However, in this book, I saw a lot of Kellan being the responsible one, watching out for the two of them and making sure they’re safe and happy. I was so proud of all three of them really. I was glad we got to see their characters more in depth and how much they’ve grown since book one.

“My heart has been fucking obliterated by you this year. I’m doing my best to deal with it, just like I promised you I would…Because I love you and I love my brother, and I refuse to watch him neglect himself like he always does just because he wants to make sure everyone else is taken care of.”

A Matter of Forever is just as well written and beautiful as all of Heather’s other books. This one isn’t as angsty as the other three, but don’t take that to mean it’s not the most emotional. I’m pretty sure this is the one that broke my heart into a million pieces, put it back together, but left cracks. There’s a lot of plot in this story, just because the love triangle isn’t the main conflict anymore. It’s her battle against the Elders now. And it’s about what she’ll sacrifice to make sure the people she loves stays safe. I really enjoyed reconnecting with all the old characters, too. Will, Callie, Astrid, Cameron, etc. they’re all there and they have little side stories going on. All in all, this is the emotional, bittersweet journey of a lifetime. The Fate series continues to be one of my top favorite series of all time. I couldn’t have imagined a better way to end their journey.

“Jesus, I am so happy for you guys. I am. It’s fucked up, but the honest truth. I am so happy that the two people who mean the most to me in all the worlds have each other. But while I’m happy, I loather it, too. Jealousy eats me alive. I can’t live like this, J. I can’t. It’s not fair to me, and it’s sure as hell not fair to the two of you.”
