A brand new novel in the New York Times bestselling Hard Feelings series—where nothing’s more dangerous than a bad boy with a broken heart…
First Sergeant Rafe Murano did everything to the extreme. He trained harder, he fought harder, and, unfortunately, he loved harder. And falling for the wrong woman nearly destroyed him.
Home from a deployment, and without his missions to consume him, Murano is ravaged by memories of his heartbreak. So he drinks until he’s numb and drowns himself in meaningless one-night stands. But they only take the edge off…
Until he meets Fallon.
Haunted by her past, Fallon Kelly knows all too well about the desperate desire for an escape. So when she sees the tatted-up bad boy who’s one punch away from a ride in the back of a squad car, she offers a distraction—one that quickly becomes an addiction.
Little does she know, this bad boy can love so hard, it can break her…
What can I say? This book wasn’t like anything I
thought it would be. I haven’t read any other books by this author, and after
reading A Beautiful Distraction I am
sitting here wondering why the hell I haven’t. This is a well-written story of
love when you least expect it. It’s how opposites attract, it’s how a woman
finally lets love in, and it’s how a man finds out what true love is. This
hearfelt tale was the perfect combination of sexy and cute, and I highly
recommend it.
“If anything he wanted to go back, to use
his missions to fill the void and distract him from his fucking ravaged heart.
He yearned for the fight, the constant sharp of edge of war, the adrenaline
that would invade the vacancy in his heart as it surged through his veins. He
needed it.”
A Beautiful
Distraction alternates POVs between Rafe and Fallon, which I always enjoy.
I really enjoyed watching them fall in love. I think the story went slower than
I’m used to, taking it’s time with their backstories and building up to their
first meeting. Rafe is on leave and has been on multiple tours in the past
eleven years. He is haunted by things he did while on duty, but mostly he is
able to keep it locked up. His real problem is his heartbreak over a woman. I
can’t say much without spoiling it, but, ugh, I hate her—she is nothing but
trouble throughout the course of the book. But the alpha way he comes onto
Fallon? *faints*. He’s the strong and silent type, but his love for Fallon
shines through his resilience and the way he steadily breaks through all her
walls.
“It had never been this good. Felt this
good. She’d never craved or needed the affection he was providing her body. But
he’d made her desirous for him. And the consequences were teetering along
terrifying. If she wanted him like this—this much, this quickly—then she was
already in trouble.”
Fallon is one of the most independent and
strongest heroines I’ve ever encountered. She owns an exclusive and tasteful
club. She was kicked out and disowned by her family when she was just a
teenager, and since then she has become a kick-ass woman. Her strength and
no-nonsense manner reminded me much of myself. She focuses solely on her
club—until Rafe shows up to see her dance one night. I definitely enjoyed
seeing Rafe break through all her defenses. No matter how frustrating it was to
watch her continually deny her and Rafe’s connection, it was great to see how
and why she is the way she is.
“He also knew that whatever was between them
was heavy, it was insane, and fast, and uncontrollably real. It didn’t take him
long to realize he was a goner, he knew the first thing in the morning he woke
up next to her. He just hadn’t realized how far and how fast he’d go when it
came to her.”
You might be thinking this is your typical romance
where they have insta-love and he chases her because she refuses to acknowledge
her growing feelings for him. It’s not, at least in my opinion it’s not. I
thought it was a refreshing change of pace from what I normally read. Sure they
have the insta-pull when the see each other at Fallon’s club, but they weren’t
instantly in love. We watch them develop a relationship that goes farther than
just sex. Oh and the sex is hotttt. It was fantastic and explosive. There’s an
actual plot to the story—it even shows the importance of family and it has lots
of delicious plot twists. All in all, I think I need to go back and maybe read
the books that are prior to A Beautiful
Distraction in this series of standalones.
“I
don’t know, Rafe. God, I want to let you. I want to love you the way you
deserve to be loved. But I don’t know how.”
“You don’t need to know how. That’s what
you’ve got me for. Fuck, babe. I’m not going to let you walk away from me
because you’re scared. Let me love you until you don’t know anything other than
my love for you. You won me gorgeous. My heart already belongs to you. You just
need to give me yours.”
