Will’s story starts where Point Of Retreat left off. Lake and Will finally had their adorable, informal marriage and now they’re on their honeymoon. They’ve just done some butterflying intense honeymooning and as they recover Lake asks Will to tell his story from the beginning. Why none of this ever came up before they got married, I’m not really sure, but nevertheless, it makes an amazing third installment to the Slammed series. So the story is mostly flashbacks in between bouts of lovemaking on their honeymoon. The first flashback is when Will’s ex-girlfriend, Vaughn, decides she can’t handle being his girlfriend anymore. She breaks up with him approximately two weeks after Will loses both his parents in a car accident, becomes his younger brother, Caulder’s, sole legal guardian, and loses his football scholarship. I was at a lost at how a girl could be so self-absorbed, but at the same time I was hugely relieved that Will wouldn’t have to waste anymore time with her. Besides, he meets Lake soon after, which is the next flashback.
We already had glimpses of Will’s point of view of Lake in Point Of Retreat, but now we get to see how Will fell in love with Lake from the first moment he laid eyes on her. He really does have this compulsion to kiss her whenever her lips are in the vicinity of his, he really did have a strong connection with her from the very beginning, he really was devastated when he found out he was her poetry teacher, he really was jealous when she tried to live out a normal high school life, he really did suffer when she was unhappy, he really did care about both their younger brothers, and most of all Will truly, deeply, loves Lake. It’s devastatingly romantic. Seeing everything through Will’s eyes makes you fall in love with them and the idea of love all over again. It makes me think that guys like Will can’t possibly exist, and if they do, then the girl they fall in love with better realize how lucky they are.
This Girl was my favorite out of the trilogy. For some reason I felt like Will’s emotions were more intense than when we read the story through Lake’s point of view. Also, This Girl focuses more on their romance. With Slammed and Point Of Retreat, we had to deal with tragedy and life lessons because of everything going on with Lake’s mom. Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of poignant moments in this one too, however, for the most part the main focus is how deeply Will fell in love with Layken. Did I mention there’s a honeymoon pool scene? Yeah might want to check that out. Oh, and don’t think that this book is all sugar and sweet. There are some pretty dramatic scenes as well. Lake and Will get into an intense argument on their honeymoon, which just reinforces my opinion that they should have had this discussion before they got married, but whatever. The argument doesn’t last too long though, and the making up part is fun of course. The ending and epilogue had me keeling over in “aww” moments. I was squealing pretty much the whole time. It was just perfect. But then again, Colleen Hoover can’t do any wrong now can she?
