The story starts off with our heroine, Samantha Rousseau, who is having a typical bad day at school/work (they are one in the same for her) where she is working towards her master’s degree while also working with birds as part of her being a wildlife biologist. Little does she know, this is also the day her life will change forever. The Duchess Rose, who comes from the country of Lilaria, has requested to have dinner with her. This is also where she meets Crown Prince Alex D’Lynsal (aka Prince Yummy), a notorious playboy likened to Prince Harry of the United Kingdom. At this dinner we are further exposed to Sam’s feisty nature. There is also a healthy dose of sexual tension between Sam and Alex, who Sam is smartly, yet vainly trying to not be attracted to. The most important takeaway from this dinner is that through her late mother’s side, Sam is the Duchess of Rousseau in Lilaria. Duchess Rose implores her to come to Lilaria as soon as possible in order to begin her newly discovered life.
From here on out, everything becomes a whirlwind of action. Sam is suddenly thrown into the spotlight. The press are relentless and hungry for the story of an ordinary girl who is suddenly thrown into royalty, which is not unlike the story of Duchess Katherine. She now has to have bodyguards and behave a certain way. She is torn in her decsioin of leaving the only life she has ever known in order to live out this fairy tale of a life. We also catch other glimpses of her ordinary life, such as her best friend slash roommate, Jess, and her dad, who has cancer and who’s treatment ends up being the ultimate factor in Sam’s decision to move to Lilaria. Through all this chaos, Alex is constantly at her side. He is reassuring and confident in Sam’s abilities to lead her people. There is a whole lot of sexual tension between the two, yet, Sam is reluctant to start anything with Alex though it is clear he wants her too. This story is not all about the romance though, it is a story about self-discovery and how life can throw the wildest curveballs, yet one must learn to simply go with it.
This book is a wonderful contemporary fairy tale. I absolutely loved it. Sam is a headstrong, smart girl. Although she makes mistakes along the way, I completely understood how she could crack under all the sudden pressure and I applaud her for not making a complete fool out of herself. The supporting characters throughout the book, such as Alex’s sweet younger sister, Catherine, and Sam’s assistant Chadwick. And I loved, loved, loved Alex! He immediately put a stop to his playboy ways when he met Sam. He never pushed her too hard, but he knew he wanted her and he never stopped trying. Did I also mention that he is super hot? Oh and the crown prince?! This book felt a bit YA at the beginning, but let me warn you! There are some steamy scenes once Sam finally stops pushing Alex away. The ending felt kind of short to me, but it was nevertheless (and not surprisingly) a true a happily ever after.

For years she has had story lines and characters begging for attention, but she resolutely pushed them aside to focus on more normal (read, boring) jobs.
Well, no longer! She is currently heeding the voices in her head and frantically writing their stories. Ms. Chase is the author of the Dark Betrayal Trilogy, Flukes, and Suddenly Royal (including several short stories).
