As one of the internet’s most prestigious video bloggers, West talks about high school relationships under the name “Sam Green.” As far as he knows, no one from school, not even his best friend, Cat, has seen his videos. But the highlight of the whole thing is Harper Knight, who comments every day at exactly 2:02 in the afternoon. He doesn’t know anything about her aside from the occasional deep philosophical messaging on why pizza tastes so delicious, but as stupid as it sounds, he might be falling for her. So when they finally agree to meet in real life, West’s hope for romance seems more and more in reach. But that all changes as soon as he arrives at their meeting spot and sees Cat walking toward him, wearing the same “I <3 Sam Green” T-shirt Harper promised she'd have on.
To his alarm, West realizes he is falling in love with the best friend who has always been a sister to him.
Click to Subscribe tells the story of West Ryder and Cat Davenport. West and Cat are the best of friends and the dorkiest of dorks. They are inseparable and share everything with each other. Well…except for the fact that West and Cat are each hiding one very big secret from one another. While West is hiding his vlog from Cat, Cat is also hiding her true feelings from West. So…what happens when best friends who share everything no longer have these secrets between them? To get to that end, L.M. takes his readers on a fun journey. And by fun, I mean to say that I laughed out loud on several occasions because these characters are hilarious! I have big plans to pocket some of these lines and use them at a future date in my own attempts to be funny.
“I just saw an ad for a box set of Star Wars and Harry Potter mugs. Do you know what this means for my life?????? Awesome things, Sam Green. AWESOME THINGS.”
While this book is immensely entertaining, there is indeed a serious side. West is still mourning the loss of his mother and dealing with the grief and anger that accompany her death. The death of his mom has profoundly shaped who West is now. Could he ever really love anyone again? Is it even worth it? I mean, he loved his mom and she died. That’s what happens, right? You love someone, they die, and in dying, they rip your heart out. Who in their right mind would willingly and knowingly put themselves in that position again? Keep that in mind while reading…you know, in the event that you want to throw something at West’s face.
“‘Sometimes,’ I say into the lens, ‘loving people sucks. It’s scary, terrifying really…”
While we read Click to Subscribe through West’s POV, we fall in love with Cat. Like West, Cat is also funny and also a dork, but she is so much more. I am a big fan of a strong-willed, confident, fight-for-what-you-want kind of girl and that is exactly what we get in Cat. I would like to be Cat’s friend. I would totally share some ice cream with her!
“We can be friends for now. But West Ryder, if you think this means I won’t fight for you with every last breath I have, you’re in for a hell of a surprise.”
In the end…do you like YA? Do you like a male character’s POV? Do you like dorks? AND do you like funny? If you can answer yes to any of those questions, methinks you should read Click to Subscribe! You know what I hope for L.M. Augustine and his future as a YA writer? Awesome things, L.M. AWESOME THINGS.
