When the game leaves the field in the second book in the USA
Today bestselling BY HIS GAME series and mixes with sex, lies, and betrayal,
the future isn't the only thing on the line...
Macey Kelly has sworn off men. Unless they’re going to zip
in and out of her apartment—and her vagina—quicker than they can give her an
orgasm, she’s not interested. Finding out her boyfriend of three years got her
cousin pregnant was a total confidence knock. Luckily for Macey, confidence is
something she has in abundance, so all Mitch’s asshole move
did was make her pretty cynical toward men.
The last thing Jack Carr needs at the start of the season is
for a dark-haired, sexy as sin, gyspyesque beauty to be consuming his thoughts.
Football is his life, which leaves no time for girls. Unless they’re the love
‘em and leave ‘em girls. Becoming one of the best running backs the league has
ever seen by racking up the yards is his top priority… not bedding Macey Kelly,
despite her affinity for blow jobs and total sexual abandon.
Avoiding each other is the perfect solution, but when your
best friends are in a serious living together kind of relationship, that isn’t
always an option. Sometimes, sex on tap is the easiest option. And the
sweetest.
Until Mitch shows up with a bombshell that could shatter
Macey’s perfectly carved out life. It’s been a year, but he isn’t giving her
up, not now he has a chance at winning her back. And he knows her buttons.
Every single one of them.
Unfortunately for him, Jack Carr isn’t a loser. The star
running back has his eye on the Vince Lombardi—and on Macey. But seeing her
hanging between them both isn’t something he’s down with, not when he discovers
why she’s so against anything more-ish, as she puts it.Macey quickly realizes
she’s the ball being passed between two desperate yet opposing teams, and that
only one of them can score the touchdown. But will the winner be the guy she
lived with and loved for three years, or will the winner be the guy who
understands her and makes her body come alive?
In this game, someone will be sidelined, and calling the
play isn’t always as easy as it seems.
(SIDELINED is a full-length, standalone novel. It's not
necessary to read BLINDSIDED before this book, but it is advised.)
“Now tell me,” I whisper, curving my arms around her tiny
body. “Did he ever want you like I do? In three years, baby, he ever desire you
the way I do? He ever make you come as hard as I do? He ever drive you to
distraction with insane need? He ever stop for one second and worship your body
like the fucking temple I know it is?”
Macey exhales quietly, but it’s the kind of breath I never
cared about before. The kind of breath that’s full of unspoken words. Unspoken
words I want fucking spoken.
“Didn’t catch that.”
“No,” she breathes out. “No. Never.”
My arms go around her body as I move in front of her and
clasp her against me. My erection rapidly deflates with the words I’m about to
speak.
“Then, babe, my part in his bullshit game is almost done,
except now, I’m calling my play. You go to him, and you let him think we’re
done. That he has a chance. You see what he can do to you. You see if he can
give you half the things I can—and I don’t even mean materially, M. I mean
forever. If you can spend a few days with your ex and truly believe he can
pleasure you like I can, treasure you like I can, then I’ll respect your
decision. But, baby…” I sink my fingers into her hair and tug her head back so
her eyes crash into mine with fire and apprehension mixing together. “Baby, if
you think he can love you like I can, then get ready for a fight to the death.”
She freezes in my arms. “Jack.”
“I’m not gonna stand here with your naked body against mine
and tell you I love you just to convince you to tell him where to go. I don’t
love you, M. But I could. I know I could. You’re more fucking perfect for me
than anything I’ve ever known. I won’t lie to you, baby. I crave your body and
I crave you, but I don’t love you.”
Her eyes flicker with something indiscernible, but I hold
her gaze.
“But just imagine—if I can make you feel physically what he
can only dream of, just think of how I could love you one day.”
She drops her eyes and rests her face in my chest. My words
hit her hard—I know they did. I’m not fucking dumb. But they didn’t hit her the
way they would most girls. Right now, I know Macey couldn’t give a shit whether
or not I love her. All she cares about is the fact that she’s the tug toy
between two guys. She’s the ball being passed from end zone to end zone,
quarterback to wide receiver. All she gives a shit about is that she makes the
right decision in the end.
All she gives a shit about is that, when it’s her turn to
call the play, she calls it right.
“Somethin’ you should know about me.” My words buzz along
her jaw with my lips. “Football is my life. That isn’t ever gonna change, but
that doesn’t mean that’s all there is to it.”
“Jack,” she whispers, her fingers digging into my sides.
“Three things you never cared to ask about me that I’m gonna
tell you anyway.” I hover my mouth above hers, my eyes steely and intent on
hers. “I play the game hard. I fuck harder. And I love even fucking harder than
that.”
“Prove it,” she whispers. “I’ve seen the first two. Prove
the last one.”
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Sidelined should seriously come with a
warning, fresh panties, and a vibrator. With extra batteries. Because. Jack
Carr. I finished the book at an ungodly hour just like I do with pretty much
all the Emma Hart books. When am I ever gonna learn that I have to read all her
books in one sitting? So, I’m sure you all know my obsession with all Emma’s
books. And just her in general. I feel like I’m writing a book review for her
every month. She’s a machine, and a genius. Anyway, Jack Carr wants some
attention in this review so enough about Emma.
“Nice try, baby. Run if you want. I’m a
running back. I’ll chase you and catch you every f***in’ time.”
“Sounds like a promise you can’t keep, doll.”
“Sounds like a promise you’re afraid of.”
I didn’t think I would like Sidelined more than its predecessor, Blindsided, but wow was I totally wrong. I don’t know who I love
more, Macey or Jack. Macey made for an interesting heroine. Stubborn,
confident, and sassy means I know we could be best friends. And that’s another
awesome thing about this series, I feel like I could be friends with the girls.
The guys are football players, so I’m not sure about them, but hey if they want
to come hang out, I definitely won’t object. Anyway, Macey is only human. She
is subject to emotions and bound to make mistakes, and the best thing about her
is that she knows how to deal with the aftermath. Whether it be with wine,
vodka, cookie dough, or Jack Carr, I felt like she dealt with all her emotions
well. Even if the book was dual POV, I felt like the story was primarily Macey’s.
Her past and present/future collide and she has to decide where she wants to
go. Yes, she has emotional/relationship issues, but don’t we all? She has a
mouth that gave Jack a run for his money which I found utterly amusing. And her
inner monologue more than entertained me, I was cracking up in between panting
for Jack.
“But she’s more than that. She’s vulnerable.
She’s soft and sweet, and whenever I call her baby, she gets this glint in her
eye that I can’t decipher. The worst thing is I can’t stop. Calling her baby is
as easy as f**king kissing her. It’s as easy as flipping her lithe little body
beneath mine to f**k her into oblivion. It’s just something I can’t stop.”
Jack really surprised me in more ways than one. First
of all, even with all the “Jack Carr is a f***ing god” teasers that Emma had
made, I didn’t really believe it. Until I panted after him the whole freaking
novel. The things he says! The things he does! He knows what he wants and he
goes after it, and to me there is nothing sexier on a man. The next big
surprise with me was that he was relentless in his pursuit of Macey, and he
made less mistakes with her than Corey did in Blindsided *snickers*. The way he just starts calling her “baby”,
and just comes over knowing that they both need sex. God, I loved it. And I
loved that he had a rocky relationship past too, that there was more to him
than just the sex god (not that I would complain if there wasn’t). He surprised
me with how much depth he had. He’s not just a football player with mad bedroom
skills. And I am head over heels in love with him.
“Baby. You think we’re worth cryin’ over? We’re
not. We’re just a couple of guys who want the same amazing girl. I wish could
say I’m sorry for fighting for you, but I’ll never lie to you, M. I’m not sorry.
Not for a f**kin’ second. You make me f**king crazy, and guess what? We officially
crossed the line to more-ish. But don’t you dare f**king run from me, baby. I
told you before I’ll chase you down and catch you every time.”
All in all, this sexy NA book was exactly the kind
of things I’m looking for these days. It was fresh and familiar all at the same
time. Of course, Emma Hart sticks to her style of alpha males and their female
match—no complaints here. I like how they tried to start off as friends with
benefits, but things escalated so quickly. Which happens a lot with Emma’s
heroes—when they fall, they fall hard. I’m seriously loving this series. And if
Jack was even more alpha than Corey, I’m almost
scared to see how alpha Reid gets. Almost. Bring it on Emma.
“Baby, you could tie me up with chains to
keep me away and you’d still be the only d*mn thing I need. You’d still be the
only d*mn thing in my life I wouldn’t change a single bit, even if you hurt me
more than I ever knew you could. And you scare me. You scare me so d*mn much
because you’re the only woman with the power to break me.”
Other books in the series...
From Emma Hart, the New York Times bestselling author of the
Game series, comes a brand new series where the game is realer, the tension is
tighter, the sex is hotter, and the stakes are the highest of all…
What happens when the out-there It-Boy of football meets the
secret It-Girl of fashion?
As the daughter of Hollywood’s sweetheart, Leah Veronica
can’t even buy a coffee without finding her face on a magazine stand, so it’s no
wonder she’s launching her first fashion line in secret. With it debuting at
New York Fashion Week in just under a month, extra time in the spotlight is the
last thing she needs.
The son of the best quarterback the league has ever seen,
filling legendary shoes as the L.A. Vipers’ quarterback was inevitable for
Corey Jackson. So was meeting Leah Veronica—the first girl to hand him his ass
without putting a hair out of place.
Getting the handsome, prickly blonde into his bed becomes
his number one goal. But getting the sexy, over-confident footballer the hell
away from her becomes Leah’s—at least until she realizes the best way to do
that is to give him what he wants.
If only it was that simple.
When Corey discovers who she is, and private photos of
Hollywood’s finest find their way online, everything they thought they knew is
thrown into disarray.
And when secrets are exposed and hearts are shattered, they
have to figure out if they’ve been blindsided by love or reality, and if it’s
worth running the extra yard to win the game they never meant to play.
In the third and final book of the USA Today bestselling By His Game series, the rules of the game no one knew they’d have to play are blurring, and when the past becomes the opposing team, hearts aren’t the only thing at stake of being lost…
Finding naked pictures of her best friend on her boyfriend’s phone wasn’t in Everleigh White’s five year plan. Neither was moving back to Los Angeles, the city of dreams that never managed to make hers come true. There’s only so many years you can be in love with your best friend before you realize he’s never going to love you back, after all. If only her ex would stop showing up at the gym where she works, she’d be much happier.
Being a father at nineteen wasn’t how Reid North, the Vipers’ wide receiver, imagined his life going, but when his ex-girlfriend tricked him into parenthood, he accepted it. Eventually. Now, with his ex on the verge of being released from prison, he’s holding onto full custody of his seven year old son, Leo. Football and Leo have left Reid no time for dating… Until Everleigh comes back.
His best friend his whole life, Everleigh never knew Reid loved her. She left before he could tell her. Now she’s back in front of him, and he’s not letting go. Even if all he gets is her friendship again. But in a city like L.A., dreams come true when you’re least expecting it.
So do nightmares.
With their exes beating down their doors with demands and explanations, their hesitant and building relationship is threatened at every corner. They’re at serious risk of being intercepted by the past, and that’s a ball Reid is determined to catch.
Except desperation can lead to stupidity—and Reid soon realizes he can’t catch every ball, no matter how perfectly it’s thrown to him. This time a fumble could cost more than a few points.
It could cost him everything.
(INTERCEPTED is the third and final book in the By His Game series and can be read as a standalone, although it is advised to read BLINDSIDED and SIDELINED before, in this order.)
By day, New York Times and USA Today bestselling New Adult author Emma Hart dons a cape and calls herself Super Mum to two beautiful little monsters. By night, she drops the cape, pours a glass of whatever she fancies - usually wine - and writes books.
Emma is working on Top Secret projects she will share with her followers and fans at every available opportunity. Naturally, all Top Secret projects involve a dashingly hot guy who likes to forget to wear a shirt, a sprinkling (or several) of hold-onto-your-panties hot scenes, and a whole lotta love.
She likes to be busy - unless busy involves doing the dishes, but that seems to be when all the ideas come to life.
