I didn’t know that he was my new piano instructor for the next six months… Truth. We would come together and fall apart. After him, every man was ruined. Truth. Excerpt

Our flight was at eleven. I glanced at my watch. 8 AM. We should be in the car and on our way to the airport by now, but I couldn’t seem to move.
I was just hurting myself. Hope was for fools. The smart people in the world accepted that and moved on. And the fools, the ones like me, would never understand. No matter how much pain was tossed their way.
Finally, after a few minutes, I gave up. I adjusted the strap of my purse and walked toward the front doors.
Then I saw him.
He stopped in his tracks. So did I.
He was a disaster and there was no other way to put it. His hair was pointing up in crazy directions. I could picture him repeatedly dragging his fingers through it. He was still in yesterday’s clothes. His shirt was unevenly buttoned, as if he had jumped out of bed and grabbed the first thing he saw.
It soothed me, just a little, that he was suffering as much as I was.
He walked toward me, looking like a man on a mission, and didn’t stop until he was directly in front of me. Standing this close I saw that his eyes were bloodshot and a day’s worth of stubble was growing in.
“I thought you’d be gone,” he said.
I gestured to the limo waiting outside. “I’m leaving right now.”
His shoulders sagged and he closed his eyes. I’d never seen him look so defeated. “I’m sorry about last night. I fucked up.”
“I’m sorry, too.”
He stared at me imploringly, almost like he wanted to say something else but couldn’t get the words to form on his tongue.
“Stay,” he said.
We stayed apart, but he might as well have been touching me.
“I can’t, Mathias,” I whispered brokenly.
“Katja, I will give you anything, I mean, anything, in this world just to keep you.”
“Anything?”
He nodded.

“Give me your heart.”

**Note: Ruin You Completely may be read as a standalone! However, some of Mathias’ background will make a little more sense if the series is read in order**

This book reminded me of why I started reading NA in the first place. Two years ago, when this genre first emerged, I loved all the angsty reads. And as time went on, I was finding less and less angsty reads and I had resigned myself to that fact. But THIS. This book stole my breath away and smashed my heart into a million pieces before it finally let me go at the end. It was captivating, dramatic, intense, and everything I haven’t had from a book in so long. When my family tried to talk to me while I was reading, I snapped at them to leave me alone—the book was that engrossing. I couldn’t put it down.

“We had our chances. We had our time. We were over. Our bridge burned and Mathias Sloan was the one to light the match…”

So, I never read book one with Thayer and Severine. But, I definitely read book two with Mascen and Emilia. Which just goes to show that you don’t need to read all the books (or read them in order) just to love this book. Because I did. I’m seriously in love with this book. Mathias and Katja are intense and captivating in a way no other couple has demanded my attention in a very long time.

“Are you glad you came here?”
His eyes held mine, “It’s the best thing I’ve done.”
The emotion behind his gaze was too much for me. If I held his gaze I’d hope for that look for the rest of my life.

I love that her books are so unique. With Ruin You Completely, I was fascinated by how her German roots were more prominent through this story line than the Sloan Brothers books. The book was fast-paced, yet the build-up made it really tense. I loved every second of uncertainty, where all we knew was that Mathias and Katja were falling for each other. This book started off with a fire, and it continues to burn throughout the whole book—a delicious, addicting burn that I wish I could feel for the first time all over again.

“You haven’t made anything easy from the second I met you.”
“We never finish what we start. You build, build, build. You make me feel like my skin is practicaly alive and then there’s…nothing.”
“What do you want?”
“I want it all, Mathias.”

Ruin You Completely was told in alternating POVs between the hero and heroine. I loved this because they seem so different, but they’re also alike in many ways. One of those ways being their love for music and the piano. I always admire books that integrate music so deeply into the plot, and this book was no exception. I loved seeing how the two had to try to fight their attraction for each other, and then how they slowly (in Mathias’ case, very slowly) gave in to their love. Mathias blew me away with his brooding, tortured, , sexy intensity. And on the other hand, Katja made me proud with her stubbornness and maturity. There wasn’t any point where I was annoyed or mad at them—well, except for when I wanted them to get together already, but that couldn’t be helped.

“Mathias couldn’t break my heart for the third time.
I wouldn’t let him.
I wouldn’t let him.
I wouldn’t let him.
But who was I kidding? This was Mathias.”

I also think that Ruin You Completely showcases how much Calia Read has grown as an author. Because she wrote her huge hit, Unravel Me, in between Breaking the Wrong and this one. Her writing style is still amazing—the emotions spot on, the plot unique, the chemistry off the charts—but I personally think she gets better with each book that she writes. I swooned, I got angry, I laughed, I got frustrated—it was a wonderful reading experience. I also loved catching up with the other Sloan brothers and their girls! We see them a lot in this book. I feel like the series truly has come full circle and it couldn’t have ended in a better way.

“Katja, I will give you anything, I mean, anything, in this world just to keep you.”
“Anything?”
“Give me your heart.”
“Anything but that.”

“Mathias, I don’t care where you could take me, or what you can buy me. That’s all bullshit in my eyes. I just want you to love me back.”
