The story before the love story….
When he lost the only woman he’d ever loved, it seemed there was nothing left to live for.
Even as a boy, all Ben Covington ever wanted was to spend forever with Dahlia London, the beautiful girl next door...then one life-altering decision tore them apart and he was forced to leave her.
Now, despite having returned to win her back, he’s still alone. She’s with someone else—someone she’s never going to leave.
Resigned to a future without his former girlfriend, Ben numbs his broken heart in a haze of liquor and women. But then the only woman who ever even turned his head while he was with his girl reappears unexpectedly. And he’s never forgotten their one incredible night together. But will Ben’s destructive behavior destroy his future with her before it even begins?

To be honest, I think a majority of us are pretty skeptical of this book and Frayed because it centers around Ben Covington, a key player in Dahlia's past from books one and two in the Connections series. If you haven't been reading the series in order, since they can all be read as standalones, this is a fantastic book to read to catch you up. If you have been reading them in order, this little novella is a great way to be intrigued by Ben. And of course, Belle. It worked for me. I was already thinking of skipping Ben and Belle's story because I didn't think I would care much for Ben, but now I have to go on!
"How much pain had I caused the people I loved by making that decision? How had I changed the course of everyone's lives? Do you ever try to pinpoint any one event in your life that may have changed everything? I do--all the time. But there seems to be so many that I'm not sure changing any one would ever change the whole or make anything better."
Ben was Dahlia's fiance before she met and fell in love with River Wilder. Ben had to fake his death and live years under cover in order to protect Dahlia. When he's finally clear to come back, he is shocked to find that Dahlia has moved on. But this novella takes place after all those events. While this novella does have some flashbacks and quite a bit of backstory, it does take place in the present in accordance with the rest of the Connections series timeline.
"I'm alone and left to pick up pieces to a life I don't know. Rock bottom. It's a phrase I never thought I'd use to describe myself, but it's the only one that fits."
I have to admit, there were some details that I forgot about Ben that now have me pretty excited for Frayed. I can already feel the amazing chemistry and heaps of sexual tension between Ben and Belle. And it's kinda forbidden right?! Because Ben's ex-fiance is Dahlia and her husband, River, is Belle's brother! Dun dun dun. I love it. This novella wasn't as steamy as the we have known Kim Karr's books to be, but there were still some sexy times. Especially because we get a glimpse into that night Ben and Belle spent together when they hooked up that one night in college. I think Ben is a little darker than the other hotties of the Connections world, and I'm really excited to get to know him. I'm off to dive into my ARC of Frayed! Be very jealous. And prepare yourself for Ben and Belle.
"Hey, I'm not sure if I should say this. I really don't know what's considered right or wrong in this situation, but that night we shared--it's one I've never forgotten."
