It’s like Tiffany King said to herself, “What kind of book could I write to give K a perfect book escape?” Then she sat and thought and wrote, and the end product was meant to come to me on Memorial Day weekend, sitting on a boat in the sun. Thank you, Tiffany King!
This book sucked me right in. Good girlfriends and a pretty boy sounds like a nice night out to me; so, Chapter One and Tiffany had me wrapped around her typing fingers! Ashton’s friends may be new friends, as we find out after a bit of reading, but it doesn’t show, especially with Tressa. Tressa is too funny; completely loyal, she pushes Ashton to do the things that scare her the most—something Ashton is trying her best to do right now—and she’s always there to pick her up and make her laugh when it’s over. I could easily read an entire book about Tressa (hint, hint, Tiffany King!).
Ashton, our heroine, is pretty funny herself. On a mission to complete her “bucket list,” she has recently arrived in Woodfalls (may I add that I have no idea in hell where Woodfalls is—just that it’s far enough north of Florida to snow in the fall—but I don’t care. I still want to go there!), and is well on her way to conquering some pretty big fears. The road to Bucket List Heaven would not be sweet, though; that was obvious in Challenge Number 1 (for the reader, anyway): Pick up a hot guy for a one-night stand. All does not go according to plan, and it was obvious to me, Mr. Sexy Voice, Nathan (her one-night stand target), her friends and probably everyone in that bar that a girl who’s throwing back shots like they’re Tic Tacs isn’t going to make it much further than her bar stool. And she doesn’t, BUT Mr. Sexy Voice, Nathan, doesn’t seem to mind the PG-13 turn the plot takes here because he comes back for more—and thank you, Tiffany King, for sending him back!
You can’t have just one scene with Nathan. That just wouldn’t be nice. He’s got that sexy voice that you can almost hear when you read him, but like Ashton, he’s funny, he’s smart, he’s a smart ass, and he’s totally prone to embarrassing blunders. Did I mention that his voice isn’t even his sexiest asset? No? Well, there you go. Sex on a stick, that’s Nathan, with a side of mystery. See, we know that someone has hired Nathan from the get-go, but we don’t know who or why. Clearly, this sets Ashton and Nathan up for some potential downfall—Nathan’s chasing her for professional and newly discovered personal reasons, and she’s running away; but we don’t know what she’s running from, exactly. And to be honest, I didn’t care. I just wanted more Ashton and Nathan—screw the bigger picture—and here’s why: They are irresistible. They are funny and completely headed for disaster, if their first few attempts at dating are any indication (think Hitch and allergic reaction, a misunderstood bridge dive ala Bella’s cliff dive in New Moon, and the mother of all rain storms on not one but TWO bucket list items!), but no one could possibly give up on these two. They’re just too much fun!
On and on with fun and love and snow angels and then--WHAM-O!—along comes a spider (metaphorically speaking)! I wasn’t happy. I might have whined a little. It’s possible I even turned my Kindle off in protest. I only lasted a few minutes though because I HAD to know what happened! And then—get ready for this one, girls—Nathan gets even better! All the happy goes to hell in a handbag but Nathan is still there, patiently waiting, biding his time and otherwise becoming famous for being perfect!
It’s possible that Tiffany King knows my heart because, just before I turned my Kindle off in protest, Nathan gave Ashton a kitten. A little orange kitten, which she must know are my favorite kitties! Like. Ever. (Although, Tiffany, I have to interject here. No way was that kitten a girl! Female orange kitties are waaaay rare! Just the way calicos are almost always girls, orange kitties are almost always boys. Wilma should have been Fred, and if she really was a Wilma, some mention should have been made about her rare status. Sorry—rant over.) So, while I sat reading and teary, Ashton and I had that little ginger furball to comfort us. Thank you, Nathan. Thank you, Tiffany.:) You are the best!
In short, I loved the beginning, I loved the middle, I loved the end, I loved the Epilogue. I loved the allergic reaction, the orange kitty, the rainstorm, the snowstorm, the face plants, the up-against-the-door-before-the-first-date action, and the long months of waiting with Nathan. So, put your sunscreen on, adjust your chaise lounge, and settle in for a day with Nathan and Ashton! This book and I had a little love affair over Memorial Day weekend, which was the point after all, wasn’t it, Ashton? And like Nathan and Ashton, it just keeps going.
